Quality Over Convenience

You can walk into many large retail stores and grab a bouquet for the price of lunch. It feels like a great deal — and sometimes it is.


Why do big-box stores offer such competitive pricing?

But here’s something many people don’t realize.


For big retailers, flowers are often what’s called a loss leader — a product sold very cheaply (sometimes even at a loss) simply to bring customers into the store. The store doesn’t rely on flowers to make money. Independent florists do.


Floristry is actually a craft. It’s understanding how flowers move together, how colours balance, correct processing and storage and how a bouquet will open over the next few days. A well-designed arrangement with intention and great care. We are our biggest critic and fan when we get your arrangement just right. We imagine your partner receiving the bouquet you ordered or the friend at work who has a birthday with a big smile!


But when flowers become just another discounted grocery item, the craft behind them slowly disappears.


Small florists simply can’t compete with a product that was never meant to make money in the first place.


And when independent flower studios disappear, something else goes with them — the artistry, the creativity, and the people who design flowers for weddings, celebrations, apologies, and farewells.


Big box flowers can have their place as a grab and go kind gesture.


But thoughtfully designed flowers — the kind created by hand — only exist because small florists still do.
